Hello everyone! I've been thinking about ditching my low end Asus router and let a pfSense-machine handle my routing. Partially because I want the extra utility that pfSense brings but also in order to have maximum performance throughput and security.
I've been wanting to repurpose some old hardware along with a dual port Intel NIC I purchased but unfortunately, none of the motherboards I've had laying around have played well with the NIC. Therefore I have considered virtualizing pfSense on a VMWare ESXi machine I recently installed.
Would that be an inherently bad idea security- and performance-wise or is it something that's commonplace? It would certainly be a neat solution since I don't need to buy parts for a separate machine and just use some of my already available hardware instead.
